How to Verify a Slewing Ring Bearing Manufacturer's Capacity Before You Source
The most expensive sourcing mistake is not a high unit price. It is discovering in week ten that the supplier cannot machine, heat treat or inspect your ring at the diameter you ordered. Before an RFQ becomes a purchase order, a Slewing Ring Bearing Manufacturer should be able to show you the equipment, the records and the paperwork behind its quotation. Below is the checklist we use when overseas buyers ask how to evaluate us, and it applies to any supplier of a precision slewing bearing or a Large Slewing Bearing.
What does "factory capacity" actually mean for slewing rings?
Capacity is not one number. For slewing rings it is four separate questions, and a supplier can pass one while failing another.
- Size capacity: the largest outer diameter the supplier can forge or roll, turn, grind and measure in one piece or in segments.
- Process capacity: whether heat treatment, raceway hardening, gear cutting and teeth grinding are done in-house or sent out.
- Batch capacity: how many rings of your size can run in parallel without delaying your delivery date.
- Documentation capacity: whether inspection data and export papers can be produced for each shipment, not just once for an audit.
A brochure figure for floor area does not answer any of these. LTZC has operated since 1992 from a 20,000 m² facility, which tells you the scale of the site. It does not replace a check of the specific machines and records for your part number.
Factory verification process for equipment, inspection records, batch capacity and export documents
Use this sequence before approving any new supplier. It works as a remote video audit or an on-site visit. Each step has a pass signal and a warning signal.
| Check | What to request | Pass signal | Warning signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment capability | Live video or photos of the machines that will handle your ring, with the part size visible | Supplier names the machine for each operation and shows a ring of similar diameter on it | Generic factory footage with no link to your size or process |
| Inspection records | Anonymized inspection reports from a past order: raceway hardness, dimensions, gear checks | Records carry dates, part numbers and inspector sign-off | Only a blank template, or a "we will prepare it later" answer |
| Batch capacity | Written production schedule for your quantity, including heat treatment and grinding slots | Schedule names the bottleneck operation and its duration | One total lead time with no process breakdown |
| Export documentation | Sample packing list, commercial invoice, material certificate and packaging photos | Material certificates trace to the steel grade in your quotation | Documents offered only after payment |
Step by step
- Send your drawing and quantity, and ask for a written process route from raw material to packing.
- Request the inspection report format and a sample record before you sign anything.
- Ask for a time-stamped video of the machines named in the route.
- Confirm which operations are outsourced and who inspects them.
- Agree in writing which documents ship with the goods.
- Approve the supplier only after steps 1 to 5 are answered in writing.
Limit: a remote audit confirms that capability exists. It does not confirm quality on your part. For a first order of high value or critical safety, a trial piece or an on-site witness inspection is still the safer route.
Can past large-diameter cases prove a supplier can make your ring?
Partly. A reference case shows that a supplier has handled a comparable size and structure. It does not prove it can do the same on your schedule or with your tolerances. Treat cases as evidence for the question "have they done something like this?", not "will they deliver mine on time?".
These are LTZC projects you can ask us to discuss in detail:
- A 2024 slewing ring with a 10.87 m outer diameter, an integral three-row roller structure for 2,000 ton fixed lifting equipment. It is the largest slewing ring LTZC has delivered.
- A 2024 integrated bearing with an 8.445 m outer diameter for a crane industry client in South Korea.
- 8 m high-precision segmented gear rings for Wuhan Heavy Industry, used in the vertical friction stir welding system of a key national project.
- φ24 m segmented bearings developed and delivered to Jiangsu Nantong Rainbow Heavy Machinery.
- A complete set of shield machine main drive ring rolls for CRCC: 15 series, 90 pieces in total.
- A 6 m segmented gear ring with ground teeth, supplied to Hengshui customers and delivered to their end customers.
Use each case as a prompt for specific questions. For the 8 m gear rings, ask how teeth accuracy was verified. For the segmented φ24 m bearings, ask how segment joints were checked before shipment. If your part is a slewing ring gear, ask for the teeth grinding and inspection method specifically. A supplier who answers with process detail is more credible than one who repeats the project name.
Which certifications and materials should you confirm before approval?
Certifications show that a management system exists. They do not guarantee that your batch is within tolerance. Confirm the scope on the certificate and match it to the product you are buying.
LTZC holds ISO9001:2015 quality management, ISO14001:2015 environmental management and ISO45001:2018 occupational health and safety certification, and is certified by ISO, CCS and ABS. If you need marine or classification society approval on a specific order, ask which certificate applies to that product and whether a witnessed inspection is required.
| Material | Stated characteristics | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| GCr15 | High hardness, wear resistance and strength | Roller and ball bearings |
| SUJ2 | High strength and hardness | High-precision, high-load applications |
| 20CrMo / 42CrMo | Alloy elements improve strength, hardness and wear resistance | Bearings under heavy loads |
| AISI 440C | Good corrosion and oxidation resistance | Environments needing high corrosion resistance |
| CuSn6 | Wear resistance, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance | Bearing applications needing these properties |
| Ti-6Al-4V | Lightweight, high temperature resistance | Aerospace and high-strength uses |
Ask for the material certificate to name the grade in your quotation. If the grade is not on the certificate, stop and clarify before production starts. For help choosing the structure, the bearing selection guide covers the main decision points, and Three Row Roller Slewing Bearings are the usual starting point for the heaviest axial loads.
What lead time and minimum order should you expect?
LTZC quotes a 30 to 90 day delivery window and has no MOQ, so a single ring or a trial piece is possible. The window is a range, not a promise for every order. Where your order falls depends on diameter, material availability, heat treatment and grinding load, and whether the design is standard or custom.
Here is how to test any supplier's lead time claim:
- Ask which operation sets the lead time for your part, and how many days it takes.
- Ask what happens to the schedule if you change a drawing after the order is placed.
- Ask whether sample or trial pieces run on the same line as production orders.
If the answers are vague, the stated lead time is a sales number rather than a production plan.
Common mistakes when approving a new supplier
- Judging by factory size alone. Floor area says nothing about whether the grinding machine fits your diameter.
- Accepting a certificate without checking scope. Match the certificate to the product line and site.
- Skipping the process route. Outsourced heat treatment or gear cutting adds both delay and quality risk.
- Asking for documents only at shipment. Define the inspection report and material certificate in the purchase order.
- Sending an incomplete drawing. Missing mounting hole data or gear parameters creates quotation guesses that turn into change orders.
Worked example: approving a 3 m gear ring order remotely
This is an illustrative scenario, not a customer case. A buyer in Germany needs a single 3 m slewing ring with a ground-tooth gear for a rotating platform. The buyer sends a drawing and asks the supplier for the process route, a sample inspection report and a video of the machine that will turn the raceway. The buyer then asks for a written schedule that separates forging, machining, heat treatment, grinding and packing. Two weeks later the buyer has a documented route, a sample report and a dated schedule, and can compare two suppliers on equal terms. The buyer also asks for the material certificate and the packing list format. Only then does the buyer place a trial order. Nothing in this process needs a plane ticket, though a witness inspection before shipment remains an option.
What after-sales support should be confirmed in writing?
Capacity ends at shipment, but the cost of a problem does not. Confirm support terms before ordering. LTZC states that quality objections receive a response within 24 hours, and on-site service in China starts within 48 hours. That on-site commitment is for China; for other markets, ask what remote support and documentation are provided. Support covers bearing installation guidance, preventive maintenance training, and fault diagnosis. If your design needs changes, Customized Bearings can be developed from your working conditions, existing designs and technical specifications.
If you are comparing a new Slewing Ring Bearing Manufacturer against your current source, send your drawing, quantity and target delivery date. We will reply with a process route, a sample inspection record format and a lead time breakdown for your review.
